Eastern Cape elephant population exploding

Eastern Cape wildlife experts and researchers are excited about the boom in the province’s elephant population which has increased from 11 to an estimated 400 in almost 70 years in the Addo Elephant National Park alone.

The Knysna region has also experienced a phenomenal increase, according to researchers.

Dr Andre Boshoff, a researcher at the University of Port Elizabeth, said the increasing number of elephants was “undoubtedly” a major boost for many tourism-related economic activities in the poverty-stricken province.

He said research had showed that by the mid-1990s, the elephant population in the Addo Park was contributing about R350-million a year to the local, regional and national economy.

The university’s Terrestrial Ecology Research Unit director, Professor Graham Kerley, pointed out that the excellent elephant-viewing opportunities in the park were clearly a major draw card for both local and international tourists.

Similarly, the elephants have made a large contribution to the economic success of many of the larger private game reserves that have recently been developed in the region.

In one case, a gross annual income of R100 a hectare under stock farming had been increased four-fold to R414 per ha under wildlife.

Addo’s resort manager, Dawid Momberg, said the park would soon surpass the 120 000 visitor mark per year.

Overnight occupancy in the park was 98 percent in October this year, and its accommodation was fully booked from November until mid-February 2003. – Sapa

Addo Elephant National Park

Woodall Country House : http://www.woodall-addo.co.za/

Founded in 1931, Addo Elephant National Park has been expanded to include the Woody Cape Nature Reserve which comprises the Sundays River, St. Croix Island and Bird Island.

You can take guided or self-drive tours to watch the animals in their natural habitat. Hiking, walking and horse back riding tours are also available.

Location

Addo Elephant National Park, one of South Africa’s 20 parks, is located close to Port Elisabeth.

How to get to Addo

The nearest airport is located in Port Elizabeth, at 75 km/46 miles from the park. If you are an international traveler, you need to fly first to Johannesburg or Cape Town and then take a domestic flight to Port Elisabeth.

Once arrived at the airport, you can choose between the coach services or renting your own car. Since Addo sees mostly self-drive visitors, renting a car might be the perfect option.

Take the N2 highway from Port Elisabeth and head to Grahamstown. When you see the sign “Motherwell”/ “Addo Elephant National Park” make a left turn and head to Motherwell. Follow the road and look for the entrance to the park on the right hand side of the road. The distance is 72 km/44.7 miles and takes about an hour.

The Wildlife

The park contains five of the seven major vegetation zones in South Africa and is natural habitat for the Big Seven: buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros, whale and great white shark.

The park is home to more than 400 elephants, 400 Cape Buffalos, 48 endangered black rhinos, lions, hyenas, antelopes and the only place where you’ll find the flightless dung beetle. Bird Island is home to gannets, penguins and a variety of marine wildlife.

Activities

While visiting Addo you can choose among several types of tours. You can walk, hike, drive or horse ride.

There are several Guided Game Drives available. Booking in advance is required mostly in the high season (October to March). There are sunrise, sunset, day and night drives available.

Eyethu Hop-on is the best option for tourists. You can hire a local guide who gets on your vehicle and guides you through the area. These are locals who have been trained for such activities. If you want to hire a guide to go with you on your car, you will pay 100 ZAR for a 2 hours tour.

Self-Drive Game Viewing is also an option at Addo. Visitors pay only the conservation fee.

There are two horse trails –Addo and Zuurberg- both for rookies and advanced horse back riders.

If you prefer to walk or hike, there are several trails to choose from. Cycad Trail is only one hour while Doringnek Trail is a four hours trail, taking you to a natural water pool.

Among other activities, there is also the possibility to go bird watching, take 4×4 self-guided tours, take a dip in the swimming pool or go to a picnic.

You can read more about the guided tours at Addo on the official website.

The Top 5 Activities in South Africa

By Chris Kyle

Woodall Addo | Addo Accomodation

1. The Kruger National Park. Located in the North of South Africa, close to the Mozambique border, the Kruger National Park is one of the most amazing natural reserves in the world for the amount of wildlife it has to offer is simply unequalled. Established over 100 years ago, Kruger is now a world renowned national park for its advanced environmental management techniques as well as its inhabitants. The central regions tend to be drier than the southern areas, but both carry different kinds of wildlife and are equally breath-taking. Kruger is also home to many game lodges so you can stay the night in the middle of the most amazing wildlife reserve in the world.

2. The Table Mountain. Probably the most distinctive mountain in the world with its huge, flat top, Table mountain is surrounded buy the Cape Town beaches and Oceans. There are two ways to get to the top of the mountain, both equally spectacular; the first one is to walk up the mountain, a hard and arduous journey but completely worth it. The second way up the mountain is using the cable cart that takes you directly from Oranjezicht through the Platteklip gorge to the top of the mountain. The Table Mountain Cableway is one of Cape Town’s landmarks, and the top of the mountain has incidentally become one of the most famous trips in South Africa.

3. South Africa’s Game Reserves and National Parks. The amazing amount of wildlife in South Africa is an amazing attraction, but calls for preservation. In this spirit, many reserves and national parks which allow tourist to see hundreds of species without causing the destruction of the animals’ natural habitat have been created. In these reserves, you can reserve a lodge for the night, or even go on Safaris, including the big 5 safari. South African Game Reserves and Natural Parks offer such an amazing array of wildlife that it would be a shame to miss them.

4. Cape Town’s Beaches. Cape Town’s beaches are renowned around the world for being one of the first countries outside Europe to bear the blue flag status, an award for the quality of beaches around the world. The Cape Town 1000 metre-long peninsula has hundreds of beaches to offer. The peninsula’s Atlantic coast is known as Cape Town’s Riviera for its unique unspoilt sceneries and is where fashionable people go to be seen. On the other hand, the Cape Town beaches of Table Bay are perfect for any kind of watersport, and bear the most amazing views of Table Mountain, but the winds do not encourage activities such as sun bathing.

5. Robben Island. Located 12 kilometres of Cape Town, Robben Island is a symbol of the country’s history as it was a prison during the apartheid, but then came to symbolise the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. The Island now bears a museum, and amazing views of Cape Town’s peninsula and coast that cannot be missed.
